Conventional Cardiovascular Imaging

Early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease rely on diagnostic imaging modalities.
Imaging techniques most frequently used in cardiology today are echocardiography, SPECT (myocardial perfusion imaging), and X ray coronary angiography (cardiac catheterization). CT and MRI are also used for cardiac indications as well as several other less frequent technologies.
Of these modalities, the primary diagnostic tool today is X ray angiography used in catheterization laboratories, with approximately 1,300,000 procedures performed annually in the US.
